CAMP COUNSELOR (CASUAL/CASUAL SEASONAL)

(Recreation Specialist Job Code: 9327)

Hours: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in summer employment to supervise recreation programs serving youth from 5 to 12 years old. The summer recreation programs are held at various parks and schools throughout the City of Sunnyvale.
The summer camp program runs June 17 to Aug. 9, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Mandatory Training is June 10 - 16.

Essential Job Functions

(May include, but are not limited to, the following):
  • Organize and lead recreation activities including arts and crafts, sports, and games
  • Supervise participants, and teen volunteers on field trips, swim days, special events and all activities held at the programs
  • Oversee, mentor and assist in training of Camp Counselors in daily job functions of the programs
  • Take attendance and assist with record-keeping
  • Issue, maintain, and store equipment and supplies
  • Interact and communicate effectively with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers and City staff
  • Ensure the safety, and well-being of program participants and teen volunteers
  • Responsible for planning, purchasing supplies, training, conducting staff meetings and supervising staff
  • Responsible for preparing newsletters, calendars, and assisting with planning and implementing summer staff training
  • Experience interacting with the public
  • Ability to supervise or support staff/volunteers independently in the absence of the Recreation Coordinator
  • Must complete mandatory training hours by attending scheduled trainings or must get approval to arrange alternative training dates
  • Assist the Coordinators with creating staff work schedules
  • Other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum age is 18 years old
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years or two (2) summer seasons of experience in a camp program or related field
Licenses/Certifications: Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record or the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin or Farsi
  • Possess a First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Experience interacting with the public
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Experience with staff/volunteer supervision
  • 32 semester or 48 quarter units completed in Recreation, Education, Kinesiology or closely related field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook)
