The Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at CSUN emphasizes interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and transnational studies with a focus on gender. Our academic program includes course work in feminist theories, women and social movements, transnational feminisms, women of color feminisms, decolonial and postcolonial feminisms, women’s economic conditions in the context of globalization and development, productions of women in the media and literature, queer studies, women’s health and masculinity studies.

Position:
The Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor with expertise in Black feminism, with a preferred emphasis in any of the following areas: Critical Race Studies, Critical Legal Studies, prison abolition movements and/or transformative justice.

The successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Gender and Women’s Studies, Africana Studies, Critical Legal Studies, Ethnic Studies, or related fields.
  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution by the start date.
  • Evidence or clear potential for excellence in teaching general Gender and Women’s Studies courses and courses grounded in Black Feminist Studies.
  • Evidence of a scholarly agenda in Black Feminist Studies, with a preferred emphasis in Critical Race Studies, Critical Legal Studies, prison abolition movements and/or transformative justice.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to effectively mentor a highly diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience or potential for using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for racially diverse students with a commitment to inclusive, interdisciplinary pedagogical practices.
  • Evidence or clear potential for future scholarly and/or creative contributions in the above-mentioned fields.
  • Experience or potential for creating a student-centered learning environment.
  • Commitment to feminist collegiality and community building practice.
  • Commitment to social justice activism and/or challenging structural inequities.

Responsibilities:
Faculty success at CSUN is measured by three criteria: teaching effectiveness; contributions to one's field of study; and service to the University and Community. The standard teaching assignment is 12 units (4 courses per semester). However, new faculty members in their first two years teach 9 units per semester (3 courses). Successful candidates should be able to teach courses offered by the Department. Faculty members are encouraged to develop new courses as needed by the Department.

Peer-reviewed publications are important for tenure and promotion, and CSUN faculty members can apply for competitive awards that provide course releases for research or fund travel for research. Presentations at academic conferences are supported with annual travel funds. Tenure-track faculty members participate in shared governance, usually in Department, College, and University committees and other service assignments.
