Job Summary

Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) fosters student opportunity in a revolutionary way by preparing students to maintain lifelong health and well-being. The Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services for the SWC provides leadership and management functions for the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinical service delivery to achieve this vision campus-wide. SJSU’s 37,000 diverse students include undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students in online and in-person programs. Under the direction of the Director, the Associate Director provides oversight to clinical services provided to the campus community. Further, the incumbent will provide clinical consultation to SWC employees and to the campus community around mental health, including mental health emergencies and will serve as a member of the SWC leadership team. The incumbent also supports the collection and analysis of data related to clients and clinical services. Further, as a licensed psychologist, the Associate Director will provide psychotherapy, outreach, workshops, consultation, supervision and crisis response. This position supports the development of policies and procedures for the CAPS unit in adherence to federal, state, and system guidelines for the provision of mental health.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversight of schedules, crisis response, and the provision of clinical services for Counseling and Psychological Services
  • Provide consultation to the SWC and the campus at large on mental health concerns, including service on the campus Behavioral Intervention Team
  • Management of counselor faculty within the Counseling and Psychological Services department, including clinical supervision for unlicensed clinicians
  • Provide oversight for clinical training programs
  • Assist with departmental administrative functions, including budget, service reports, and data collection
  • Provide brief individual, relationship and group psychological treatment for SJSU students


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of, and experience with clinical and personnel applications of various aspects of diversity (e.g., sexual orientation, gender identity, religious practices, disability, racial and ethnic diversity)
  • Ability to be sensitive and responsive to student needs
  • Maintains dignity and self-control in difficult situations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence, reports and procedure manuals
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful strategic collaborations across departments and divisions within a University
  • Strong management skills including ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with ability to effectively manage change and resolve complex problems independently
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and responsive skills to establish and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to promote administrative innovation, quality customer service, teamwork, open channels of communication, and a safe work environment
  • Ability to exercise initiative, flexibility, good judgment and discretion
  • Knowledge of psychological counseling in a clinical, academic setting
  • Knowledge of crisis management and intervention


Required Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or related field
  • Licensed as a psychologist
  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in mental health counseling services
  • Experience providing individual and crisis counseling to college age clients
  • Experience supporting, coordinating, and/or supervising clinical doctoral training programs


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in University Counseling Centers and the provision of brief therapy in that environment
  • At least one (1) year of experience with administrative, budget, and personnel leadership responsibilities
  • Experience working in and with multi-cultural, diverse populations


Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $10,000/month - $10,500/month

CSU Salary Range: $6,250/month - $20,063/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
