Job Summary This position performs duties under the limited supervision of the Network Services Director. The Cloud Network Engineer works independently to plan, design, engineer, operate, support, maintain, and monitor the wide area network, private cloud, hybrid cloud, public cloud, wireless and local area networks on campus. This position serves as the expert-level primary for the emerging Public Cloud Infrastructure network technologies (i.e; GCP, Azure and AWS). Lead network technology projects from evaluation, implementation, validation, and documentation. Prepare and execute plans for campus expansions and upgrades, including integration of other campus services. Collaborate with other CSU campuses to integrate/access SJSU services with other systems hosted at different CSUs/cloud/vendor sites. Provide Full Lifecycle for Emerging AWS/Azure/GCP Public Cloud Infrastructure. Collaborate with ISO to design, plan and maintain network systems, on premise and in the cloud, to adhere to ISO policy and standards. Secure network resources from inappropriate access and other threats. Address security related issues for network access and devices. Collaborate with Campus resources on security incidents. Develop and manage processes and procedures to support daily campus network/VOIP services and operations. Manage network/VOIP services based on ITSM practices established by IT. Conduct network tests and monitoring of network integrity, performance and security to identify service issues and develop plans for remediation. Maintain and support network equipment and software systems, including firewalls, switches, WAPs & WLAN controllers, VOIP Infrastructure and other network related hardware and software. Recommend initiatives and changes to improve quality and services. Follow all change management procedures including preparation of change requests to execution. Mentor and cross-train staff on best practices and operational processes. Create and maintain documentation for assigned technologies. Troubleshoot network problems for Cloud, WAN, LAN and Wireless communications and security issues. Troubleshoot VOIP related issues for SJSU Managed VOIP infrastructure like UC/UCCE. Our Pulse Network Engineer performs a variety of complex tasks in analysis, design, testing, installation, monitoring, integration and maintenance, and maintaining the health and security of all network services and associated systems of the broadband network. Our Pulse Network Engineer performs a variety of complex tasks in analysis, design, testing, installation, monitoring, integration and maintenance, and maintaining the health and security of all network services and associated systems of the broadband network. This position is responsible for the design, configuration, operation, enhancement, and troubleshooting of a large, complex city government enterprise network and advanced broadband-based Triple Play services network and other networks such as GPON, Carrier Ethernet, MPLS, and DWDM networks. The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $98,891 annually with a hiring range of $75,000 - $86,072 annually , depending on qualifications and experience. Essential Functions Perform extensive design, configuration, deployment, management, maintenance and troubleshooting in GPON and Active Ethernet fiber optic switching technologies, OLTs, ONTs, various wireless technologies (such as WiFi, WiMax and PTP Microwave), switches and routers, firewalls, VPN concentrators, and servers. Translate customer requirements into feasible solutions and work with teammates and cross-functional teams to design, plan, communicate, and implement those solutions. Plan and design local and wide area data and voice (converged network) communications connectivity. Maintain the health and operations of all networks, servers, and services. Maximizes network performance by monitoring performance; troubleshooting network problems and outages; scheduling upgrades; collaborating on network optimization. Document network problems and resolution for future reference. Review, research, and resolve complex problems relating to network and server installation, integration, security, configuration, and monitoring. Participate in an on-call rotation to support the network operations center and technical service representatives. Develop and document system standards and provide documentation of all new and existing logical and physical networks and infrastructure. Review and monitor connectivity, project development, adherence to networking standards, and thorough testing produced by network contractors, vendors, and staff for quality control. Upgrade network hardware and software components as required. Design, analyze and manage enterprise network including installation, maintenance, and security of LAN/WAN. Assist with routing and switching configurations changes as part of day-to-day operational support or planned/engineered changes Other Job Functions Serve as a liaison with outside vendors, local key accounts, and service providers on technical issues relating to networking equipment, servers, transport, and connectivity. Complete special projects as assigned. Provide technical support to colleagues within engineering and network operations. Upgrades network hardware and software components as required. Participates in various network projects in the areas of project engineering, scheduling, equipment upgrades and copper or fiber optics installation. Assists with research, evaluation and implementation of new network technologies and tools. Assists with maintaining technical standards for network operations. Creation of network documentation and diagrams. Work with regional partners in solution-oriented approaches. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: 4 Year / Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Communications or related field. An equivalent combination of education and or experience may substitute for education requirements on a year for year basis. Experience: 3 years as a Network Engineer, Network Administrator, Systems Engineer, or working as an engineer in an ISP or network operations environment. Certifications Must possess a valid driver's license. Preferred: Current certification in Cisco, Juniper and/or Nokia Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of ISP, WAN, or similar network environment Experience with configuring and managing routers, layer 2/3 switches, and wireless devices (access points, stations and PTP equipment) Experience with GPON, Active Ethernet, OLTs, and FTTP hardware Knowledge of and experience with the following: Advanced network protocols such as ARP, IPv4/v6, ICMPv4/v6, OSPFv2/v3, DHCPv4/v6, DNS, NAT, and QoS Network loop prevention, load balancing and redundant services such as SVI, VTP, RSTP, VRRP, SRRP, GLBP, Multi-Chassis sync, iBGP/eBGP tuning attributes Advanced layer 2/3 network services such VPLS, VRF/VPRN, Classes of Services, and Service Flow Through provisioning) Transport and access technologies including MPLS, IPSEC/GRE, MEF Carrier Ethernet, DWDM VoIP technology and industry standards such as SIP, MGCP and PSTN call routing Intermediate to advanced experience in a Linux server environment. Trouble Ticketing or Incident Management system. Network management and monitoring systems. Basic scripting experience in BASH, perl, PowerShell, VBScript or python.
