    OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST - PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

    $9,268 - $12,658 per Month

    SUMMARY OF POSITION
    The Public Health Bureau has an opening for a part-time (0.5) Occupational Therapist-Physical Handicapped Children (PHC) in the California Children’s Services (CCS) Program. The Occupational Therapist-PHC delivers a full range of occupational therapy services to physically handicapped children including evaluation, planning, and providing OT treatment to children with physical disabilities. The Occupational Therapist (OT) works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, physical and speech therapists, social workers, nutritionists, school personnel, and outside agencies to meet the therapy needs of the children served by the CCS Medical Therapy Program (MTP). The mission of the CCS MTP is to maximize the quality of life for special needs children through the provision of Physical and Occupational Therapy services including ongoing assessment, treatment and consultation to the child, family, and community.

    Sign-On Bonus: As of September 8th, 2023, the Health Department offers up to a $10,000 signing bonus to candidates hired into regular part-time positions for this classification from this recruitment.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process will be used to fill current and future vacancies, both regular and temporary, as they arise.

    Examples of Duties

    • Performs a full range of occupational therapy work with physically handicapped children.
    • Teaches self-care activities in such areas as communication, feeding, dressing, personal hygiene and other activities of daily living; instructs child through well directed activity to develop maximum functioning in fine motor skills and other movements. Adapts games, crafts and other activities as therapeutic exercises.
    • Evaluates physically handicapped children to determine occupational therapy needs; sets therapy goals and objectives.
    • Keeps records and prepares reports on patient’s treatment and progress.
    • Establishes and monitors therapeutic exercise programs in conjunction with instruction to parents or care providers; provides treatments to patient and instructs parents and other care providers in intervention techniques in order to enhance level of function and motor skills. Discusses child’s specific disability with parents and families; instructs them in the use of special equipment and a home treatment program, visits the child’s home to evaluate home environment and home therapy program; provides instruction to parents and adaption of home environment.
    • Consults with physicians to determine type of extent of treatment required; cooperates with other professional staff as needed for maximum benefit to the child in reaching therapy goals and objectives.
    • Provides consultative services for staff of agencies involved in the care of physically handicapped children; participates in parent and community meetings; orients interested individuals to the therapy program. Works in cooperation with local health and educational authorities and community organizations.

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Thorough Knowledge of:
    • Principles and methods of accepted occupational therapy, especially as applied to physically handicapped children.
    • Therapeutic techniques commonly used in occupational therapy work; proper use and operation of modern occupational therapy equipment and appliances.
    Working Knowledge of:
    • Growth and development of normal and handicapped children.
    Skill and Ability to:
    • Administer occupational therapy treatments and exercises.
    • Analyze, evaluate and draw logical conclusions from data.
    • Read, understand and interpret physician’s orders and instructions for therapy and the use of equipment.
    • Write to keep records and prepare reports.
    • Communicate orally in order to teach and instruct parents and children.
    • Develop and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


    Examples of Experience/Education/Training

    Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

    Experience: Approximately two (2) years of experience as a registered occupational therapist, preferably providing therapy to physically handicapped children.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    • Pursuant to Section 2630 of Business and Professions Code, possession of a valid, unexpired license to practice physical therapy issued by the State Board of Medical Quality Assurance512031 of Title 22 of the Administrative Code, incumbent must be a graduate from a curriculum in occupational therapy approved by the Council on education of the American Medical Association in collaboration with the American Occupational Therapy Association and shall be registered by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
    • Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
    • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
    Desirable Qualifications:
    • New graduates with clinical experience in pediatrics are encouraged to apply.
