    Job Description

    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    Under the direction of the Lead Operations Ranger, this position performs complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work including all phases of maintenance and repairs to facilities, equipment and grounds to include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and mechanics at Mother Neff State Park. Performs preventative maintenance (cleaning/inspecting) of park facilities and buildings, public restrooms, and furnished rental cabins. Performs all aspects of grounds keeping, landscaping, habitat and trail management including, but not limited to trimming, weeding, mowing and herbicide/pesticide application in accordance with all State regulations. Operates and maintains all types of equipment such as hand tools, power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, trucks, tractors, and other gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. Performs administrative functions such as reports, recording and submitting vehicle logs, equipment logs, fuel logs, safety inspections, and any other data entry as needed using an Excel spreadsheet, Word Document, or other software applications. Assists with purchasing and drafting purchasing requisitions. Assists with visitor services to include: providing information, revenue collection, conducting interpretive tours, educational programs and special events. Maintains public relations and works with volunteer and community service workers. Assists with the Resource Management Plan, Regulation Enforcement, and Public and Employee Safety. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from High School or GED.

    Experience :

    Three years of facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.

    Licensure :

    Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license;

    Must possess or be able to obtain within six months of employment, a Non-Commercial Political Subdivision Applicators license issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

    NOTE : Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :

    Education :

    Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Experience :

    Three years of experience in building and facility repair techniques such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or mechanical;

    Experience working with the public;

    Experience in customer service and public relations.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks;

    Knowledge of general maintenance techniques and custodial, facility cleaning duties;

    Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices;

    Knowledge of general grounds and landscaping techniques;

    Knowledge of routine equipment and vehicle maintenance;

    Knowledge of revenue collection and visitor services;

    Knowledge of basic mathematics;

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

    Skill in using personal computers;

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

    Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions;

    Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment;

    Ability to consistently clean facilities on a daily basis;

    Ability to learn an on-line registration system and utilize a computer in a Windows based environment using word processing and spreadsheet programs;

    Ability to work as a member of a team;

    Ability to conduct an interpretive tour and special events;

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

    Ability to accurately handle cash and account for revenue collected;

    Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

    Ability to follow and enforce rules and regulations, provide park security, and respond to emergency situations;

    Ability to implement and comply with a resource management plan;

    Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use;

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes flexible schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

    Required to respond to emergencies and on-call situations;

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

    May be required to operate a State vehicle;

    Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
