    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    PLEASE NOTE:

    PHYSICAL WORK ADDRESS: Inland Fisheries Hatchery, 5550 FM 2495, Athens, TX 75752

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    Under the direction of the Hatchery Biologist, this position performs routine to complex (journey-level) fish and wildlife conservation work. Responsible for assisting in propagation, rearing and distribution of fish species. Monitors and records water quality. Performs data collection duties and accurately records fish samples. Responsible for grounds, facilities, and equipment maintenance. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from high school or GED.

    Experience :

    FWT I : No experience required.

    FWT Il : Four years of relevant experience.

    Licensure :

    Must possess or be able to obtain, within thirty days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.

    NOTE : Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :

    Education :

    FWT II : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a relevant bachelor's degree may substitute for two years of the required experience.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries Science or related biological science.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

    FWT I:

    Knowledge of aquatic organisms, principles of fish culture.

    Knowledge of vehicle and motor mechanics and maintenance.

    FWT II, Knowledge of FWT I, PLUS:

    Knowledge of potential environmental contaminants and fish kills.

    FWT I:

    Skill in handling high-pressure situations.

    Skill in demonstrating good work habits.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

    FWT II, Skills of a FWT I, PLUS:

    Skill in designing, maintaining and repairing specialized hatchery equipment.

    FWT I:

    Ability to identify fish species and common aquatic organisms.

    Ability to operate light farm equipment and pull a gooseneck trailer.

    Ability to follow special written and verbal instructions.

    Ability to perform manual labor including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    Ability to work under moderate supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    FWT II, Abilities of a FWT I, PLUS:

    Ability to identify fish disease and stress

    Ability to work under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

    Required to adjust to changing schedules that include flexible hours with night and weekend hours.

    Required to work overtime as necessary.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to operate a State vehicle.

    Required travel 10% with possible overnight stays.

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
